Many of us have experienced the pain of a first degree burn with a sunburn. First degree burns affect the epidermis. Second degree burns affect the epidermis and dermis and are commonly associated with blisters and are very painful. Third degree burns are full thickness and can appear white or leathery and are often painless due to nerve damage. Depending on the degree and the extent of tissue damaged by the burns, some can be treated on an outpatient basis while others require surgical resection and reconstruction.
